Dave's Top TipMy first experience of skiing was unfortunate. A colleague invited me to assist on a residential week for teenagers. "But you'll need to get some training in," he said. "We're off to the dry ski slope next week. Come along." So, off I went, and graduated from the nursery slopes quickly. On my third visit, I accidentally put my weight on the wrong foot on a snowplough turn about halfway down the run - turning into a human snowball (sans snow) which collapsed in a heap at the bottom of the slope I looked a mess. The toothbrush-hairs on the dry-slope had left a jagged bite-mark just above my left eyebrow. And I had a dull pain in my right arm that wouldn't go away. A visit to the A&E Department confirmed my worst fears - the elbow had experienced a tiny chip, right at the end. Faced with the cancellation of the ski trip and the prospect of my arm being trussed up for a month; I injected some humor into the situation: Levelling my gaze at the surgeon, with a trembling voice I asked, "Will I be able to play the violin when my arm is out of the sling?" "I don't see why not," he replied. "There's a 95% chance of regaining the full use of the arm." "That's marvellous," I exclaimed, "I couldn't play a note before this accident - what a wonderful place this hospital is!" No matter how bad the situation is - there's always something to be thankful for
